(though I agree with the first comment written by kritika, where she says that 'men need to change'. I think they need to share the burden of the work at home, he lesser work which is usually looked down at and hence is supposed to be done only by females.)

Recently I came across these
two articles about women in our society by Kalki Koechlin and by Chetan Bhagat,
which I would like to share with you all. Especially because, its triggered a
question in my mind and may be by sharing it with some people might make them
think on it and hopefully might bring some change, doesn’t matter how small it
is.
“Do we really respect our
women?”
And by respecting I don’t mean
celebrating women’s day once a year (BTW we don’t celebrate men’s day because
all year through we care about them) or sharing forwards about ‘how women do so
much and sacrifice so much for us’ once a while. By respect I mean, do we look
at her as another equal human and not as a woman? And when I am using the word ‘we’
I am addressing not only men of our society but also the women including
mothers, mother in laws, sister in laws and everyone else.
Do we really reasapect our
women? Are we considerate and sensitive towards them?
Today women are educated, intelligent
and independent. They pay their own bills, take study loans and manage them on
their own, drive around alone to manage work, manage kids, manage finances,
share the burden of EMI’s with their father/ huband. While they help and share
the financial burden with their male partners, in return do we consider sharing
their burden? Do we ever wonder how she manages office and home both? While we
come home and relax after work, she is busy making dinner and preparing dabba
for next day. While we get up and relax on sofa in front of the TV on a Sunday morning,
she gets up and makes breakfast, lunch so we get it ready on table in front of
us. Have we ever wondered that like us she also works the whole week and might
want to relax over weekend? Have we ever noticed that she has to help her
mother in kitchen after college while her brother goes to play cricket?
And when this stress gets
too much for her, becoming a house wife is the only solution left for her?
A man can choose what he
wants to do in life. He can become an engineer, a hair dresser, a scientist or
even a cook. And he will get the care and respect when he return home after
work irrespective of his job or his skills or his earnings. But a woman doesn’t
have choice when it comes to home chores. Whether she is good at it or not and
whether she has a liking towards it or not.
When a girl gets married she
is taught to be happy in whatever her husband earns and gets home cause not all
men are equally talented at everything and not all men are equally successful.
Then why do we expect only excellence from our daughters and daughter in laws,
when it comes to cooking and other home chores? Are all women born with cooking
talent? And liking towards it?
When a baby is born, he
needs mother’s milk, her love, care, affections equally whether it’s a boy or a
girl. The innocence, the playfulness, the curiosity doesn’t depend on the
gender. Where and why do we start treating them differently as they grow up?
While there are lots of such
unfair things women have to live with in our society; the worst thing is we don’t
even notice it forget about being considerate about it.
I just have one question,
can we forget the gender and look at her as a human for a change? If we lived
with a guy friend instead of our wife, will we still expect him to do
everything alone that we expect our wife to do? Wont we help him and share the
work with him? Then cant we help her too? Does she become a super human just
because she is born a female?
The day we will start considering
her equal to us in everything, even in every small work & every small moment of the
day, we will have truly learned to respect her.
