How to Format PC?

Hi Guys,
Here is something that can be helpful for you. We all work on Windows Xp and face various types of problems regarding speed, Memory, Drivers, Networking etc. The biggest threat is of Virus. Many viruses are configured to crash your system and you just cannot back up your data. Most of the time you can't get access to Task Manager to check the resourses running. If your AntiVirus is not updated or if it's not able to clean the Virus, You may need to format the disk to remove virus completly. Here I am telling you the process of formatting C drive with bootable Windows Xp cd and fresh installation of Windows Xp.
Please note: Hard disks, which are the primary storage devices on your computer, need to be formatted before you can use them. Formatting a disk means erasing all data and configuring the disk with a file system so that Windows can store information on the disk.
Warning: All data on the Hard disk will be erased once you format it.

So if you are planning to format C drive of your machine, Please copy My Document, My pictures, Favourites and Fonts folders and paste them to some other drive, may be D or E before starting actual Formatting.
Things you need: Windows XP home or Windows Xp Proffessional Bootable CD. Working CD rom.
Process: Make a list of programs installed on your PC. You will need setup of those lateron. If you dont have any Drivers for Internet Printer, Scanner or Modem, Please download them before formatting. Dont forget to copy My Documents, Fonts and Favourites folder on D Drive. Once you have copied all the important data on other drives, you can restart your PC. After restart when PC boots up (as soon as you hear a beep sound from CPU) press Delete button to go to BIOS Setup options. Navigate to Advance Chipset Features and chnage first boot device to CD Rom. It was previously set as ide-0 (Hard disk). After setting Cd rom as the First boot device. Restart PC. Now your computer will boot with the help of Cd. You will see the message "Press any key to boot from cd". Once it gathers all the information about your configuration, it will show you three options. 1) Press Enter to install windows xp. 2) Press R to start recovery Console. 3) Press F3 to quit.

  • Press R to start recovery console.
  • The screen will switch to black and you will be asked which installation to log on to. If you only have one installation you will press "1". Remember that numlock is off at this time.
  • Next you'll be prompted to enter your Admin password. By default it is created blank so just press Enter.
  • Type map and press enter. You will get information about your drives free space and partitions.
  • Now It's time to format your drive. The following will do a full format of C as FAT32
  • FORMAT C: /FS:FAT32
  • You will be prompted if you really want to delete all the data from Drive? press Enter or Y.
  • Formatting will start. Once it's completely done. you can type Exit to restart PC. Next time when your Pc boots with CD. Choose first option of installing windows Xp.

Congratulations! you have successfully formatted Drive c and installed Windows XP! ----- Sam.
